Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound(MRgFUS)

Focused Ultrasound Treatment & Essential Tremors- An Innovative Approach

Essential Tremor stands as one of the prevailing movement disorders globally, impacting around 0.9% of the global population.

These disorders, like essential tremors, can significantly hinder an individual's physical, social, and psychological well-being, diminishing their overall quality of life and often necessitating the support of a caregiver. Furthermore, Essential Tremor, being a progressive neurological condition, imposes substantial healthcare costs.

For specific Essential Tremor (ET) patients unresponsive to medication, focused ultrasound offers a non-invasive treatment option. Conducted in an MRI suite, this procedure typically allows patients to return home on the same day.

FOR PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Harness the Therapeutic Power of Focused Ultrasound

Exablate® Neuro

Exablate® Neuro delivers up to 1024 ultrasound waves to precisely heat and ablate deep brain targets with no surgical incisions or burr holes. Treatment is guided by MR imaging for patient-specific planning, real-time temperature monitoring as well as immediate confirmation of treatment outcome.

First, low energy is applied for locating the ultrasound to the anatomic target followed by physiologic evaluation of patient response including tremor relief as well as potential side effects.

Once the target is confirmed, the energy is gradually increased to create a highly accurate and controllable lesion. The result for many patients is immediate improvement of tremor with minimal complications.

How does the treatment work?

The MR Guided Focused Ultrasound treatment is as easy as this:

Step 1: Before

  • On the day of your treatment, your head is shaved off completely so nothing interferes with the ultrasound beams
  • The full procedure will take 3 hours
  • A urinary catheter is placed so you don't have to go to the bathroom
  • Heart rate, blood pressure & blood oxygens levels are monitored throughout

Step 2: During

  • During the treatment, you will lie down on the treatment bed inside the MRI scanner
  • You will be conscious during the procedure and will be able to communicate with the medical team
  • You will be given a "stop sonication" button if for any reason you want to stop the procedure
  • Your physician will first apply light doses of ultrasound energy to identify the right pot in your brain for treatment. This will be followed by full-intensity ultrasound energy
  • The treatment bed will be moved in and out of MRI after each application of ultrasound energy so that physician can evaluate the improvement of your tremors and any potential side effect

Step 3: After

  • A final MRI Scan is done once the treatment is over
  • The frame will be removed
  • You will go back to the recovery room
  • Within a few days, you can return to normal activities
